We became the new owners of Herding Hill Farm in October 2010 when we moved from the outskirts of Leeds. Steve was working as an electrical engineer and Anne working with special needs children in mainstream school. After Steve having being made redundant five times since 2007 we decided to get out of the rat race. The next stage was what shall we do? we have always fancied owning a campsite but they can be quite a price when you look at buying an established site. We have been caravan & camping for 16 years and during the summer of 2010 we had our caravan on a seasonal pitch at Leaplish caravan site, Kielder. As we had been visiting Kielder and the wider Northumberland area regularly, we fell in love with the County and decided to make the area our home. We started looking for properties and came across Herding Hill Farm on a day trip to Haltwhistle's outdoor swimming pool. As soon as we viewed the property we realised the potential of adding a caravan & camping site to the existing Farm Shop and Tearoom business, We decided to take a huge risk and bought the 55 acre farm without planning permission for the campsite. We can't praise both the planners and the bank enough for supporting our idea especially in the current economic climate. So with a great deal of hard work and perseverance, during the worst winter to hit the UK since records began with temperature plummeting as low as -21 degrees we started to designed the site and submitted our planning application December 2010
We gained permission on the 31st March 2011 and opened Good Friday albeit in very basic form with only 20 pitches and three big chief wigwams. Our first year was excellent with lots of customers praising our site and location so we felt we need to have more pitches as we had to turn away customers due to being full at certain times. So at the beginning of September 2011 we built our new top quality Amenity Block and installed an additional 2 Wee Brave and 3 ensuite Wigwams with Hot Tubs. We also installed 9m square gravel hardstanding caravan/motorhome pitches along with 10 level grass premier pitches with 10A EHU, a duck pond and a Roman Fort childrens playground with a pirate ship for the toddlers. These new facilities opened on Good Friday 2012.
We had an excellent first year and the second winter, thankfully, was much milder. Our Caravan, Camping, Wigwam Site & Cafe Bar has proved to be very popular and we have been privileged to meet lots of interesting campers and made many good friends along the way. Many of our guests returned more than once in the first year and still continue to rebook.
Our third season has started and although we have had a long winter with extreme weather we are getting lots of repeat bookings and new customers too from all other the country. A high percentage of these have never been to Northumberland and fall in love with its peace and tranquility. We are also privileged to be so close to Hadrian's Wall. We also get lots of people coming from the north east/west as we are under an hours drive. Word of mouth is such an important part of our success.
Our takeaway pizza and breakfast sandwiches service is very popular as it takes away the stress of cooking yourselves. We now have a 15 and a 9 bed ensuite bunkhouse and two Tentipi tents that are pre erected available to hire. Visit our website again soon for further updates.
We also sell some campsite essentials such as airbeds, tent pegs, chemical toilet liquids and toiletries.
Herding Hill Farm is a great place for Hadrians Wall Camping, and we are planning to become Hadrian's Wall Premier Caravan & Camping Site.
