Herding Hill Farm is less than one mile from the dark sky discovery site at Cawfields Quarry, within the Northumberland International Dark Sky Park. On clear, moonless nights the location is simply breathtaking.

Around 85% of the UK population has never seen a truly dark sky. So, for an astronomic experience (that won’t cost the universe), head to Herding Hill Farm for unrivalled stargazing.

On a clear night, the skies above our campsite come alive with billions of shimmering stars making up our Milky Way, a plethora of planets, dazzling meteor showers and the glow of galaxies like Andromeda that are out of this world.

The best time for stargazing when dark sky camping in Northumberland is during the autumn and winter months, when the nights draw in. Herding Hill Farm is a Northumberland campsite open all year. You don’t need an expensive telescope, just bring a pair of binoculars and a deck chair. Or, stargaze from the warmth and relaxation of your own private hot tub when you book one of our Wigwam cabins with hot tub or our luxury lodge with hot tub.

Kielder Observatory

Located approximately 1 hour from our campsite and deep within the Northumberland International Dark Sky Park and Kielder Forest, Kielder Observatory is a magical and unique visitor attraction. The observatory holds regular public events, inviting members of the public of all ages, to engage in discussions and observations of the Universe. Northumberland International Dark Sky Park

The Northumberland National Park was given international dark sky status in December 2013.
