Herding Hill Farm is in a rural isolated location, 1.2 miles from the nearest town of Haltwhistle up an extremely steep tarmac road without footpaths or street lighting. The hill is not recommended for caravans, but alternative road access is available via the B6318 either from Greenhead or Chollerford. There is walking access to Haltwhistle across fields and rough tracks. The nearest railway station is located at Haltwhistle, with trains from Carlisle and Newcastle.
The AD122 Hadrian’s Wall country bus runs during the summer months between Hexham and Greenhead via Haltwhistle and along the Military Road, stopping at the various forts and museums. The bus stops outside the site and is an accessible service. A copy of the route information and timetable can be found at www.gonortheast.co.uk/timesfares/ad122 or is available from Reception. Otherwise there is no public transport to the site. Unfortunately, we can’t offer a private collection service.
Eco-cabs (Hexham) provides wheelchair access taxis - their number is 01434 600600.
The site is mainly flat throughout, but the car park, roadway and parking areas are gravelled making wheelchair access difficult, although not impossible.
Car Parking and Arrival
The site has a security barrier which is accessed via a security code provided on arrival. Reception is located outside this gate and has level, gravelled car parking facilities directly outside. On request we can do the registration without the guest leaving their car.
Once booked in, guests may park one car on their pitch. Any additional cars can be left in the car park at an additional charge. Please note that there is no car parking available by the tipis and belle tents and all cars must be left in the car park at the opposite end of the site.
Reception and Shop
These are located at the park entrance. There is a large gravel parking area outside. The shop stocks a small range of items, with the closest supermarkets and facilities being located in Haltwhistle (1.2 miles away). Our wardens will assist with the selection of any items if required. There are no steps at the entrance. The doorway is 88cm wide and the Reception area/shop is accessible for wheelchairs and pushchairs. There is room for a wheelchair to manoeuvre and turn.
The reception desk is low enough for seated access and a seat is available should it be required. The floor is wood laminate effect. The reception area is lit with fluorescent strip lighting.
The wardens speak English only. To help with communication in the office we can provide pen and paper to write instructions or questions on. All areas and pitches are clearly signposted from reception with an infographic map given to all guests on arrival as part of our Welcome Pack.
If help is required getting to the booked pitch this can be arranged..
Grass, standard and serviced pitches are available, with the latter being hardstanding. Pitches are pre-allocated prior to arrival and our wardens will utilise reasonable endeavours to account for all the needs of our guests stipulated at the time of booking. All pitches are clearly numbered and marked out by small trees or bushes. Our grass pitches measure 6m*4m as standard with 6 larger pitches (8m*6m) also being available. The hardstanding pitches are 9m*9m. We also have a small number of backpacker pitches available for short stays. The hardstanding pitches are level and well drained, but there is a slight slope on some of the grass pitches. All hardstanding pitches have 16-amp electric hook-ups available and the grass pitches have 10-amp electric hook-up. There are 3 serviced pitches which have their own cold water tap and waste water drain in addition to electric hook-up.
All touring pitches are within 100 yards of the Amenities Block. We do have an accessible grass pitch located adjacent to and 3 hardstanding opposite the Amenities Block which can be allocated on booking if requested. Specific requirements can be added in the notes section when your pitch is booked, and our Reception staff will make a note on our system which, wherever possible, locks your request into place.
Our wardens are available to assist with the pitching and levelling of your caravan or motorhome if required.
These are located at the lower end of the site, away from the site entrance. Access to the cabins is via series of 2-3 wooden steps and the cabins are not suitable for wheelchair access. Some of our cabins have an external hot tub which is accessed via a series of 3 steps.
The lodge and its private patio area is accessed via a long ramp, however there is a lip which may cause issues for some wheelchair users when accessing. The doorway to the lodge is 81cm wide. The Lodge is all on one level and is equipped with TV, fridge, cooker and microwave. It has 2 double bedrooms and a twin room, one of the double rooms has an en-suite room with shower, toilet and hand basin. There is also a family bathroom with a bath.
The belle tents and tipis are located at the bottom of the site next to a small pond and are located furthest away from the reception/shop and the Amenity Block. Access to these is over rough ground and is it not possible to park a vehicle next to your tent here. Unloading a short distance away can be accommodated. Access to the belle tents is via steep wooden stairs.
We have one Amenity Block located in the centre of the site. Our facilities are open 24 hours a day and have been awarded 5-star status by the AA and Visit England. There are free power showers, under-floor heating, a family bathroom, baby changing facilities and 2 baths available in the ladies toilets. There are grab rails in the shower area and next to the toilet and there is a seat provided for use in the bathroom area. A red emergency alarm cord is fitted.
There are 2 dishwashing-up sinks located outside to the side of the amenities building. These are conventional height.

Water and refuse points are marked on the infographic map. The refuse bins are located at the Amenities Block, between the Wigwam cabins and at the side of Reception. Recycling is taken off site to be sorted so guests should deposit all rubbish in the bins provided. Water points are located around the site. The chemical disposal point is located outside the Amenities Block. Fire extinguishers are located at the top, middle and bottom of the site. These facilities are all clearly marked on the infographic map provided on arrival.
The site is basically a flat site which undulates gently. All the paths and road ways are gravelled. The surrounding area overlooks rural countryside and is hilly and rough in places. A small pond is located at the bottom of the site next to the glamping village.
A childrens’ play area is located at the rear of the serviced pitches. Seating is available to those who wish to watch their children play or supervise, with a requirement that all small children are supervised by an adult at all times. The play area has wood bark as a soft-landing area.
A small animal petting farm is located across a rough access track. Children are encouraged to join in the supervised feeding twice a day.
Currently there are no seating areas around the site itself other than what is available in the play area.

All dogs are welcome whether they are pets or assistance dogs although they must be kept on a leash at all times whilst on site.
