About Herding Hill Farm

Our gorgeous campsite is located in rural Northumberland, just a stone’s throw away from Hadrian’s Wall. Our mission is to give our guests an unforgettable experience whatever the weather and allow them to create long-lasting memories for all the family.

Since March 2018 Herding Hill Farm has been owned by employee-owned business WCF Ltd, who also operate 2 further 5-star camping sites near Edinburgh and in the Peak District.

Welcoming Guests to Our Home

The majority of our team live on site and are proud to call working for Herding Hill Farm their home. They run the site as if it were their own and are deeply passionate about providing our guests the warmest of welcomes from their initial enquiry right until they return home. Many guests return year after year and we now call many of them our friends. We welcome their ongoing support, loyalty and advocacy.

Continuous Improvement

As passionate campers and glampers ourselves we know what good looks like and are continually striving to make improvements to improve the facilities and amenities for our guests. Each piece of guest feedback is carefully considered to see how we can improve and we regularly implement guest recommendations. Whilst working at our Northumberland campsite, our team are encouraged to find better ways of working to improve the guest experience no matter how small. We are a small team and expect everyone to work with the same high standards without being asked or told.

5-Star All the Way

Our team are immensely proud of our AA Platinum status and work hard to maintain the 5-star facilities at our Northumberland campsite and the high standards we set for ourselves. All members of the team are expected to undertake a variety of roles whilst working for Herding Hill Farm, turn their hand to anything and be flexible and resilient depending on the needs of the site and our guests.

Things will arise you have never seen before when working at Herding Hill Farm in a campsite warden role, which means that no two days are the same. We are all expected to turn our hands equally to whatever needs doing, both inside and outdoors. We seek to give our teams diverse and interesting roles, but it is inevitable that there is a large amount of cleaning particularly on changeover days.

Thinking on your feet in a variety of situations is the key to being a successful campsite warden who puts guest experience at the heart of everything they do. Out of hours there may not be anyone to run your decision by and it isn’t a 9-5 job. Despite everyone’s best intentions late arrivals do occur and particularly for the wardens there may be no official “clocking off” time.

We strive for a 95% success rate on our 5-star guest feedback, with most guests mentioning the friendliness and commitment of the team in their reviews, who regularly go above and beyond to make their stay as memorable as possible. It’s why we have so many returning guests.

Community Minded

Our beautiful location as a rural Northumberland campsite in the shadow of Hadrian’s Wall is very special to us. We directly support a range of local charities through corporate giving and guest fundraising, with special activity weekends taking place at Easter and Bonfire Night. We are proud of our ongoing collaboration with North Tyne Mountain Rescue which you can read more about HERE. We are also corporate members of the Northumberland Wildlife Trust.

Our owner WCF has a number of different partnerships such as the Cumbria Community Foundation and Carlisle Youth Zone, as well as providing charitable donations of both cash and product to a range of local and national charities. We also encourage our teams to take part in volunteering for the local Haltwhistle community, as well as fund-raising for causes which are special to them.

Our People

Our mission at WCF and Herding Hill Farm is to give our people diverse and interesting roles in the rural community in which we are based and provide them with the freedom to contribute positively to the site. We foster a culture of continuous learning and personal development and invest significant levels of training, both on and off the job in our people.

Through our Site Managers, Sue and Phil Humphreys, we divest significant levels of responsibility and autonomy and encourage the team to run the site as if it were their own. We believe this allows them to make good decisions on behalf of our guests. Our focus on a positive employee experience fosters high levels of engagement resulting in long service and the retention of talent which is unusual in the leisure sector. Many of our campsite wardens do multiple seasons with us. This means that our people have high levels of personal connection to both the campsite and to our returning guests.

WCF are proud to be a Real Living Wage employer and pay our teams a wage rate based on the real cost of living, as well as providing free touring pitches for our on-site campsite wardens. Our teams are also eligible for a wide range of other benefits.
