We think the petting farm is the highlight for children of all ages on our Northumberland campsite where you can meet our range of friendly animals! Why not join our site wardens in the twice daily animal feeding?
Meet the animals at Herding Hill Farm. We have:
- Rabbits, guinea pigs and hens - our very own Spice Girls!
- Goats Aaron and Alvin
- Alpacas Mambo, Knight and Minstrel
- Donkey Coco
- Shetland pony Robin
- Two kune kune piglets Chilli and Ginger
They are always keen to meet our guests and your little ones are still very welcome to come and say hi to them whenever they are not sleeping. You may be lucky enough to be around to collect eggs from our happy hens. All our animals love the attention they receive from our guests! You can set your watch by Coco when he knows it's feeding time!
Stargazing
Our child-friendly campsite offers a great range of activities and camping facilities for all the family! And if you’re looking for something a little different when family glamping Northumberland, we’d recommend giving stargazing a go. Our Dark Sky friendly campsite in Northumberland is in a prime spot to enjoy stargazing as its located less than one mile from the Dark Sky Discovery Site on Hadrian's Wall at Cawfields Quarry, within the Northumberland International Dark Sky Park. You don’t even have to leave the campsite to go stargazing, you can enjoy it from the warmth and comfort of your outdoor hot tub in a Wigwam cabin or our lodge or from your own campfire, available to hire for your pitch or Wigwam. You can find out more about stargazing and camping Northumberland with children at Herding Hill Farm here. The Kielder Observatory is around an hour's drive from our Northumberland campsite and the local Twice Brewed Inn has a planetarium and offers stagazing events. We offer stargazing kits for hire. Let your children safely explore our very own Roman fort adventure playground whilst you sit back and relax. Our playground is complete with slides and climbing nets for endless hours of fun – as well as burning off that extra energy!
Our play area is specially designed to stimulate children’s minds, encouraging imaginative play. With several play options including a toddler’s pirate ship and a disc swing, we can guarantee our play area will keep young children occupied during their stay at Herding Hill Farm as well as giving them the opportunity to meet other guests. The large, enclosed play area at our child-friendly Northumberland campsite is safe and secure, complete with play bark for a safe and soft landing.
There is also a ball field.
Cycling Routes
Explore the great Northumberland countryside with a child friendly cycling route, a great activity to get your children out exercising in the fresh air. We’d recommend small sections of the Hadrian's Cycleway where you can take a shorter route of the ride starting at Bowness-on-Solway or the old railway line, the South Tyne Trail, from Haltwhistle through to the amazing 100 feet high Lambley Viaduct. There are lots of other great cycling routes in the area if you fancy giving a few a go! You can find more information about local cycling routes HERE.

Events
We have regular children's events on site to celebrate a number of occasions including Halloween, Bonfire Night and Easter, including craft mornings, treasure hunts and adventure trails. There are a range of children's games and activity sheets in our indoor campers kitchen.
Here is just a sample of a great review we received from a
guest who was camping Northumberland about our child friendly campsite:
“Where do I start. It’s been the first
time we have brought the 3 children to this site and we can’t thank them
enough. There hospitality is second to none! And have went above and beyond to
ensure that my 10 year old non-verbal autistic boy had just as much fun as my
other children during activities throughout the stay. From feeding the animals, arts
and crafts, and the allocation of our pitch (right next to the park to ensure
we could supervise with giving freedom) ordered the beautiful homemade pizzas
on our first night and they were cooked to our requirements as asked for my son
who has to have it cooked a certain way and advised it would be no issue at all
to return them to reception and they would be cooked till they were perfected.
All staff are so friendly and can’t do enough to help asking for suggestions in
any way to improve things for children like Archie. The site is immaculate,
well kept, toilets and showers (with baths) are 5* and the views are
unbelievable. This is our favourite site and will be booking more from now on.”
