Please note: Our animal feeding and children's playground remain closed due to Covid 19
Herding Hill Farm is proud to be a child friendly campsite in Northumberland, with an abundance of facilities and activities we know children of any age will love! From feeding the animals in our petting farm to stargazing for those aspiring astronomers, there are plenty of activities to keep our younger guests busy, meaning all the family will have a memorable experience whatever the weather! Or if you fancy a Northumberland road trip afield why not hire one of our two VW T6 campervans?
We think the petting farm is the highlight for children of all ages on our campsite where you can meet our range of friendly animals! From rabbits, guinea pigs and hens to goats, alpacas, a donkey, and a Shetland pony – we have a variety of wonderful animals you can enjoy cuddles with. They are always keen to meet our guests and even though children's animal feeding is currently suspended due to Covid, your little ones are still very welcome to come and say hi to the animals. You may be lucky enough to be around to collect eggs from our happy hens or assist with the daily feeding of some of our animals including our alpacas Mamba, Knight and Minstrel. Our donkey Coco, the goats Aaron and Alvin and Robin the Shetland pony also love the attention they receive from our guests! You can set your watch by Coco when he knows it's feeding time!
Our child-friendly campsite offers a great range of activities for all the family! And if you’re looking for something a little different, we’d recommend giving stargazing a go. Our Dark Sky friendly campsite in Northumberland is in a prime spot to enjoy stargazing as its located less than one mile from the Dark Sky Discovery Site on Hadrian's Wall at Cawfields Quarry, within the Northumberland International Dark Sky Park. You don’t even have to leave the campsite to go stargazing, you can enjoy it from the warmth and comfort of your outdoor hot tub in a Wigwam cabin or our lodge or from your own campfire, available to hire for your pitch or Wigwam. You can find out more about stargazing with children at Herding Hill Farm here. The Kielder Observatory is around an hour's drive from site and we also have two VW T6 camper vans for hire if you want to explore more of Northumberland with your little ones.
Children's Playground - please note currently closed due to Covid-19
Let your children safely explore our very own Roman fort adventure playground whilst you sit back and relax. Our playground is complete with slides and climbing nets for endless hours of fun – as well as burning off that extra energy!
Our play area is specially designed to stimulate children’s minds, encouraging imaginative play. With several play options including a toddler’s pirate ship and a disc swing, we can guarantee our play area will keep young children occupied during their stay at Herding Hill Farm as well as giving them the opportunity to meet other guests. The large, enclosed play area is safe and secure, complete with play bark for a safe and soft landing.
Explore the great Northumberland countryside with a child friendly cycling route, a great activity to get your children out exercising in the fresh air. We’d recommend the Hadrian's Cycleway where you can take a shorter route of the ride starting at Bowness-on-Solway or the old railway line from Haltwhistle through to the amazing 100 feet high Langley Viaduct. There are lots of other great cycling routes in the area if you fancy giving a few a go! Our VW T6 camper vans for hire also have cycle racks on them if you fancy exploring further afield.
Events - please note our events are currently restricted as a result of Covid-19
We have regular children's events on site to celebrate a number of occasions including Halloween, Easter, Bank Holiday and more including craft mornings, treasure hunts and adventure trails. Visit our Events page here to discover our latest events. Unfortunately we have no events running in 2021 on account of Covid-19.
Here is just a sample of a great review we received from a
guest about our child friendly campsite:
“Where do I start. It’s been the first
time we have brought the 3 children to this site and we can’t thank them
enough. There hospitality is second to none! And have went above and beyond to
ensure that my 10 year old non-verbal autistic boy had just as much fun as my
other children during activities throughout the stay. From feeding the animals, arts
and crafts, and the allocation of our pitch (right next to the park to ensure
we could supervise with giving freedom) ordered the beautiful homemade pizzas
on our first night and they were cooked to our requirements as asked for my son
who has to have it cooked a certain way and advised it would be no issue at all
to return them to reception and they would be cooked till they were perfected.
All staff are so friendly and can’t do enough to help asking for suggestions in
any way to improve things for children like Archie. The site is immaculate,
well kept, toilets and showers (with baths) are 5* and the views are
unbelievable. This is our favourite site and will be booking more from now on.”
