The Magic of Autumn Travel in Northumberland: Why Families and Couples Love an Autumn Escape

As the summer crowds fade and Northumberland’s landscapes are painted in golds, reds, and russets, autumn is one of the best times of year to plan a getaway. Whether you’re a family seeking outdoor adventures or a couple craving a romantic retreat, an autumn escape to Herding Hill Farm Camping and Glamping Site near Hadrian’s Wall offers something truly special. Many campsites close between October and Easter but Herding Hill Farm is a Northumberland campsite open all year round.

Why Choose an Autumn Break?

Autumn is often an overlooked season for travel, but it’s actually one of the most rewarding times to explore Northumberland. Here’s why:

  • Places are less crowded

It’s back to school in September for the kids, so family-friendly destinations and the roads are less crowded. You can expect shorter waits, more availability in restaurants and accommodation and fewer crowds especially on the most popular walks like Steel Rigg to Sycamore Gap. This means peace and quiet,

  • Travel is cheaper

Off-peak travel always brings savings. Lower demand for services and accommodation can mean lower prices – a huge benefit of getting away in Autumn. Herding Hill Farm has competitive low season rates from mid September onwards and many of our glamping pods in Northumberland are available for a minimum one-night stay. This gives you opportunities to upgrade your accommodation - perhaps add a hot tub or a fire pit?

  • The weather is mild

As the UK continues to experience extreme temperatures in Summer, milder weather is perfect for exploring particularly if you want to enjoy Autumnal Northumberland walks. The weather is still dry, with good daylight hours. Crisp mornings and cooler nights make snuggling by a firepit or relaxing in a private hot tub under the stars even more magical.

  • Stunning scenery

Watching the seasons change is one of the joys of nature. Picture the changing colours of leaves, conkers on the fall and richer landscapes. From the rolling hills of the North Pennines to the sweeping views along Hadrian’s Wall, autumn light brings the landscape to life. Whether you’re a budding photographer or you just love taking a walk to enjoy the scenery, Autumn landscapes are amazing. With locations such as Hadrian’s Wall, Allen Banks, the Northumberland coast and Kielder Forest on our doorstep – you'll be spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing where to explore.  The Northumberland 250 route is particularly beautiful in autumn, with winding country roads surrounded by fiery foliage.

  • Celebrate the new season

Autumn is a great time to celebrate the new season. It’s the perfect time to take a break before the Christmas madness begins! So, why not get away and relax in between the hustle and bustle of the seasons?

  • Autumn Wildlife

Autumn is rutting season for red deer, and Northumberland National Park is alive with birdlife preparing for winter.

  • Cosy pubs

End the day with a hearty meal by the fire in one of the many welcoming country inns nearby.

  • Autumn Stargazing

There are plenty of activities to enjoy for Autumn travel in Northumberland which is one of the best places for stargazing in the UK. Autumn stargazing can even be enjoyed from your outdoor hot tub or around a fire pit drinking hot chocolate. Autumn is the best season for stargazing. It gets dark earlier, so you don’t have to stay up too late and it’s warm enough to still be outdoors. There are also some great Autumnal constellations and the view of Mars and the Milky Way are spectacular on a clear night. We offer stargazing kits for hire.

  • Amazing Autumn activities

Northumberland hosts plenty of autumn festivals and harvest activities, perfect for kids. As Halloween approaches you might fancy pumpkin picking? We’d recommend Brocksbushes Farm which is just a 29-minute drive from Herding Hill Farm. Just take care when you are carving it. Spooky walks are available at Belsay Hall or why not make up your own treasure hunt? Chillingham Castle is often referred to as Britain’s most haunted castle.

Crisp fallen leaves, pine cones and conkers make great tools for outdoor crafts especially if you can mix the magnificent Autumn colours. And who can resist jumping in or tossing a pile of dry freshly fallen Autumnal leaves – adults and children alike! Apples are in abundance during Autumn so why not collect some and do some baking?

Guests can hire a fire pit whilst staying at Herding Hill Farm to enjoy some extra warmth or toast marshmallows – the ultimate Autumn activity. You could even make up ghost stories around the fire. Just don’t forget the hot chocolate.
