Cawfields Quarry

Previously a Roman quarry , where Hadrian’s Wall hangs on the edge of the sheer crags of the Whin Sill, and just one-mile from Herding Hill Farm, Cawfields is the starting point for two fine walks along Hadrian’s Wall, West to the nature reserve at Walltown Quarry and the Roman Army Museum or East past Milecastle 42 to Steel Rigg and The Sill National Landscape Discovery Centre, this is one of the finest stretches of Hadrian’s Wall. It is a beautiful spot for a picnic and one of the best dark sky stargazing spots in the UK.
