Family Glamping Northumberland

Now that the school holidays have started how are you going to keep the children entertained? If you're dreaming of a family holiday that blends the beauty of nature with a touch of convenience, glamping in Northumberland might be just what you need. At Herding Hill Farm, located just a stone's throw from Hadrian's Wall and nestled within the Northumberland Dark Sky Park, we offer the perfect base for families looking to explore, unwind, and create unforgettable memories with their little ones.

Why glamping is perfect for families with young kids

Glamping (glamorous camping) combines the fun of the great outdoors with home comforts – an ideal setup for families with babies, toddlers or primary school-age children. At Herding Hill Farm, our Wigwam cabins offer platform beds with foam mattresses, WC’s in our Running Water Wigwam cabins, electric and heating, and even hot tubs, meaning there's no need to compromise on comfort or routine.

Plus, there's no tent to pitch, no soggy sleeping bags, and no midnight dashes across a field to find a toilet. Everything is ready for you to relax and enjoy the fresh air from the moment you arrive. We offer bedding and croc boxes for hire if space in the car is limited.

Why Herding Hill Farm is perfect for family glamping

We know that families want safe secure spaces for their families. Our site layout means that our Wigwam cabins are far from any road and, with a safe grassy area in front of the cabins, children can play safely.

The site has a no music rule and a quiet site policy after 10.30 so you can stay with us secure in the knowledge that you and your children should get a good nights sleep.

Our Wigwam cabins are located a short distance from our 5-star amenity block, which has family bathrooms with baths, perfect for young children, a laundry as we know travelling with young children involves lots of washing and an indoor campers’ kitchen with plenty of seating, board games and children’s activities for when the weather is not so great. There is also a freezer, kettle, toaster and microwave.

On-site fun for young explorers

We know that happy kids mean relaxed parents, and that’s why Herding Hill Farm has plenty to keep little adventurers entertained:

  • Campsite Playground: A safe, enclosed playground with a Roman fort climbing frame, and swings
  • Ball Field: Large area to run around to let off steam and make new friends
  • Petting Farm: Say hello to our friendly animals including alpacas, donkey, Shetland pony, pigs, goats, and chickens. Children are welcome to join our wardens in the twice feeding animal feeding.
  • Campfires & Stargazing: Toast marshmallows by your own firepit which can be hired on site and marvel at the stars – Northumberland boasts the darkest skies in England.

Our site is designed with families in mind. There are baby-changing facilities, family friendly bathrooms with baths, high chairs available for hire, and plenty of safe open space to roam.

Top tips for glamping with little ones

  • Pack for All Weathers: Northumberland’s weather is famously changeable – bring waterproofs, wellies, and sunhats, as well as something warm if you want to enjoy the Northumberland dark skies. Our CAMPING CHECKLIST provides a handy tick sheet of what not to forget.
  • Bring Familiar Comforts: A favourite blanket or teddy helps kids settle into a new environment
  • Use the Fire Pit Safely: Make it a fun, supervised family activity with hot chocolate and marshmallows. Why not try some fun story-telling games to get them away from their electronic devices?
  • Get Involved: Let children help wash up outdoors, feed the animals or collect kindling – little tasks feel like big adventures.

Even more family holiday tips for a fun & fuss-free break

  • Book Early for Peak Dates: Popular family-friendly sites like Herding Hill Farm often sell out during school holidays. Booking early gives you the best choice of dates and accommodation types
  • Bring Portable Nightlights or White Noise: Young children often sleep better in familiar, softly lit environments. A nightlight or white noise machine can help soothe them to sleep in new surroundings
  • Don’t Overpack the Day: One or two activities a day is plenty. Kids can get tired quickly – leaving space for naps or free play will help keep moods happy and the family budget.
  • Use Nature as a Playground: Bring bug jars, binoculars, or simple scavenger hunt lists. Glamping puts you right in the heart of nature – no need for expensive entertainment.
  • Involve the Kids in Planning: Let them help choose an outing or pick what’s for dinner. It helps build excitement and gives them a sense of ownership over the trip.
