AA Campsites in Northumberland 
We are so proud to be one of the few 5 star campsites in Northumberland. We have recently renewed our AA 5 Pennant Gold Award for caravan and camping with a Quality Score of 97% for camping and 96% for glamping which makes us one of the best AA campsites in Northumberland.
According to the AA website “AA Gold Pennants are awarded to the very best camping parks with a Quality Score of 90% and above.” The AA Inspector made the following comments on his most recent visit:
- Site never rests on its laurels and is always keen to improve and move on
- Support of local businesses by selling their products in the shop
- Great cleaning regime and grounds well tended
- Added value areas include sauna, BBQ hut and animal petting farm
- Glamping guests have full use of all the campsite amenities

Herding Hill Farm also participates in the Visit England National Quality Assessment Scheme and continue to be rated by them as a 5 star campsite in Northumberland. Herding Hill Farm is rated number one on Trip Advisor for campsites in Haltwhistle, Northumberland with almost 800 reviews and an average rating of 4.8. We were also awarded the Traveller Choice Award in 2025. The TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice Award is an annual recognition given to businesses and destinations that receive consistently great reviews and ratings from travelers on Tripadvisor over a 12-month period. - We have nothing but good things to say about it. The site and the accommodation are in a lovely setting and immaculately clean and well cared for. Dark Sky Friendly Campsite
Northumberland is home to the largest dark sky park in Europe, where you can see some of the most beautiful stars in the darkest skies. Northumberland International Dark Sky Park was awarded Gold tier status in 2013, making it officially the best place in England for you to stargaze. Herding Hill sits south of the B6318 Military Road and is therefore outside the International Dark Sky Park but our skies are just as spectacular for stargazing and we are perfect for dark sky glamping on account of the low levels of light pollution. Our guests regularly enjoy sights such as the Milky Way whilst sitting around one of their fire pits or relaxing in the comfort of their own private outdoor hot tub. Campfire Magazine lists Northumberland as one of the best dark sky stargazing spots in the UK and lists Herding Hill Farm as an excellent place to stay.
