History

If exploring local history is your ideal leisure pursuit, you will be spoiled for choice. Not only are we located right in the middle of Hadrian’s Wall Country, you will also find numerous historical landmarks and sights of interest close by including the famous forts of Housesteads, Vindolanda and Birdoswald. Carlisle Castle is just 24 miles west of Herding Hill Farm and dates all the way back to 1093. It has been the sight of many battles and even once housed the famous Mary Queen of Scots as a prisoner in 1567. Just 18 miles, also west along the A69 is Lanercost Priory, one of the best-preserved monasteries in Cumbria, dating as far back as between 1165-1174. Both landmarks are English Heritage sites.

46 miles east just south of Newcastle and Gateshead, is Beamish, the world-famous open-air museum, which tells the story of life in the North East of England during the 1820s, 1900s and 1940s. Taking a tour down the drift mine, visiting the pit village, taking a ride on the tramway and visiting the old sweet shop are just a handful of the many things to do at Beamish. Closer to Herding Hill Farm there is the South Tynedale Railway, at Alston, where you can take a trip on a steam train. Located at Carlisle Lake District Airport, you could also visit the Solway Aviation Museum, which houses a collection of aircrafts, aviation artefacts and displays.

We are lucky to be located in, an area which is rich in history, you can find even more places to visit on the Visit England website.

A little further north, just an hour’s drive away you could also visit Kielder Forest, where you can enjoy mountain biking, fishing, walking, adventure activities as well as the world famous Kielder Observatory. For the little ones, Walby Farm Park is an all weather attraction that younger children would love.
