At Herding Hill Farm, we’ve welcomed thousands of guests to our Northumberland campsite near Hadrian’s Wall in the heart of Northumberland, so we know exactly what you’ll need for a smooth, comfortable and unforgettable camping experience. We’ve cut out the hard work by providing you with a list of everything you will need. From unpredictable British weather to star-filled skies and rugged Roman landscapes, camping in Northumberland is a true escape into nature—if you come prepared!

Essentials for your Camping Pack List
What to pack for camping: Camping Essentials
- Tent (with pegs, mallet, and groundsheet) – unless you’re glamping. If you need help pitching your tent or caravan, our wardens are on hand to help
- Sleeping bag suited for cooler nights - a silk sleeping bag liner can also help keep you cool in Summer and warm in Winter
- Camping mat or inflatable mattress - as well as being more comfortable it will stop the cold steeping from the floor
- Pillow - we offer linen packs for hire if space in the car is tight, check out our Optional Extras for hire
- Headtorch or lantern (plus extra batteries) - for those late night toilet trips
- Camping chairs
- Table (optional, but handy for meals) - our Wigwam cabins all have picnic benches outside
- Water bottles or hydration system
- Cool box or camping fridge - our Wigwam camping pods all have fridges

What to pack for camping: Cooking & Food Supplies
If you're planning to cook at your touring pitch or glamping pod, don’t forget the following:
- Camping stove or BBQ - we do have gas and charcoal BBQs available for hire, enquire at Reception or add to your booking
- Gas canisters or charcoal
- Lighter or matches
- Pots, pans, and utensils
- Plates, bowls, and cutlery
- Washing up bowl and sponge
- Tea towels and cleaning cloths
- Reusable containers and foil
- Cool bag or insulated bag
- Bin bags for rubbish and recycling

What to pack for camping: Clothing for all weathers
The Northumberland weather can be beautifully unpredictable, so layers are key. Even in summer, nights can be chilly, especially under clear stargazing skies! And if you get wet having dry clothes to change into is a must.
- Waterproof jacket and trousers
- Fleece or warm jumper
- Thermal base layers (essential for colder months)
- T-shirts and long sleeves
- Walking boots or sturdy shoes
- Extra socks and underwear
- Woolly hat, gloves, and scarf (especially in spring/autumn)
- Sun hat and sunglasses (yes, we do get sun sometimes!)
- Flip-flops or slip-ons for shower blocks
- If you are staying in our hot tub accommodation or want to hire our sauna don't forget your swim suit
- Some people find a robe useful for gettting to and from the amenity block or hot tub

What to pack for camping: Toiletries & Hygiene
Our 5-star amenities block means you can enjoy luxury facilities, but it’s still helpful to bring:
- Towels
- Toothbrush and toothpaste
- Shampoo and shower gel
- Hairbrush
- Toilet roll
- Hand sanitiser
- First aid kit (plasters, painkillers, antihistamines)
- Bug spray – midges can make an appearance in summer
- Sunscreen
Optional Extras for a magical trip
- Binoculars or telescope – perfect for stargazing
- Camera – to capture the landscapes and skies
- Books or games for rainy days
- Blankets – for cosy nights around a fire pit
- Portable power bank or solar charger - although all our tent and touring pitches and camping pods do have electric
- Notebook or journal – to record your trip
- Local walking maps – especially if you're heading out on the Hadrian’s Wall Path
Don’t Overpack: Glamping or Lodge Guests, You’re Covered!
If you’re staying in one of our luxury glamping pods, our Castle Pods or lodge with hot tub, many home comforts are already provided. That means less to carry and more time to relax! You’ll still want to bring layers, torches, and outdoor gear—but leave the tent and sleeping bags at home.
