Alnwick Castle
One of Britain’s most iconic castles. Home of the Percy family and the second largest inhabited castle in the UK after Windsor, Alnwick Castle, located on the outskirts of the Northumberland market town of Alnwick, is famous for its Harry Potter connections. The castle doubled as Hogwarts in the films and broomstick training a popular activity on offer. The spectacular Alnwick Garden (separate entrance fee) next door has a fabulous 120-water jet Grand Cascade, Poison Garden and magnificent Treehouse Restaurant? Our Alnwick Castle Pod is decorated in pastel pinks to reflect the beautiful Rose Garden of the nearby Alnwick Gardens.

Nearby Seahouses does fabulous fish and chips and from here you can take a boat trip to the Farne Islands, owned by the National Trust, which are a haven for grey seals and seabirds. Between April and June you will have a good chance of spotting puffins and if you are lucky you might even see a dolphin or a porpoise. Our Bamburgh Castle Pod is decorated in pink and teal to reflect the pink campion wildflowers that cover the nearby sand dunes in Spring.

Chillingham Castle
Said to be the most haunted castle in the UK, Chillingham Castle, a Northumberland stronghold, is an evocative place to stay or visit. Its idyllic garden and grounds boast commanding views of the surrounding Northumberland countryside. With some of the highest levels of paranormal activity in the country there are highly popular guided ghost tours at night with stories of ghouls, phantoms and torture chambers. Aydon Castle
A short walk from the market town of Corbridge, the fortified manor house of Aydon Castle, which is operated by English Heritage, is perfect for a picnic in its secluded walled garden. Sometimes there are even Roman re-enactments. Corbridge Roman Town is an excellent place to visit to understand what life was like in a bustling Roman community. Thirlwall Castle
The closest Northumberland castle to Herding Hill Farm, Thirlwall Castle is best combined with a Hadrian’s Wall walk and visit to the nature reserve of Walltown Quarry Country Park, from where you can climb to one of the best preserved sections of the Roman Wall. The nearby Roman Army Museum allows visitors to immerse themselves in life as a Roman soldier on the frontier. The nearby village of Greenhead has a tearoom and pub. Our Thirlwall Castle pod is decorated with daisies, abundant in the fields nearby.

Warkworth Castle
Warkworth Castle sits high above a loop on the River Coquet with views down to the fishing village of Amble on the North East coast. In the Spring the hillside on which the castle sits is a blanket of golden daffodils. It’s cross-shaped great tower or keep is almost complete, even though it was built by the first Earl of Northumberland over 600 years ago. The castle is owned by the Percy family. Visitors to Warkworth Castle, now managed by English Heritage, can also explore the nearby Hermitage, a religious building carved out of the rock, accessible by a walk half a mile up river followed by a boat trip. This hidden gem was probably built as a private chapel for the first Earl of Northumberland. The castle was lost to the Yorkists during the War of the Roses and reclaimed in 1470. Our adults only accessible Warkworth Castle Pod is decorated to depict the vibrant yellow daffodils that adorn the hill on which the castle sits in the early Spring.
