Next time you stop at Herding Hill, why not enjoy a family day out in the Northumberland area. With lots of different activities, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Go-Ape, Maften  

If you are looking for more of an adventure filled day out, why not spend the morning at Go-Ape? Only a 33-minute drive from Herding hill Campsite, located on the grounds of Maften Hall country house hotel, a high ropes course is waiting to test your nerves. It will be worth it at the top with famous landmarks awaiting you in the trees. They are even open on rainy days, making it even more of a fun experience. Dogs are even welcome on the site so you don’t have to leave them behind, they can watch if someone doesn’t want to participate. Spend the afternoon in Newcastle?

Northumberland College Zoo 


Located only 55 minutes from Herding Hill Campsite in Kirkley, just outside of Newcastle City Centre is Northumberland College Zoo. Spend the day visiting all the different animals and learn all about each one from mammals to reptiles. You can even experience being a zookeeper and meet some of the animals. When you are finished, spend the rest of the afternoon in Newcastle which is only a 23 minutes’ drive away. There is even a café on site and a soft play area.

Belsay Hall, Castle & Gardens

Step into England’s story at Belsay Hall. Walk through the enchanting gardens and discover exotic plants that grow within and climb the castle's 14th century defensive ‘pele tower’ to be amazed by fantastic views over Northumbrian countryside. When you have worked up an appetite, stop for a coffee and cake break in their Victorian café. Belsay Hall is located 47 minutes from Herding Hill campsite.

The Metro Centre  

The Metro Centre has lots of family activities to enjoy including adventure golf, a cinema, an arcade and even Clip ‘n’ Climb. There are also lots of shops and eating establishments to explore throughout your day spent here. Located in Gateshead, the Metrocentre is 44 minutes’ drive from Herding hill campsite, an ideal location for a family day out, especially on those rainy days.
